Informational Writing: Today we looked at student samples. We looked at a kindergarten, first, second and third grade piece. We studied the samples to identify what a student at each grade level should be able to do when writing an informational piece of writing. We learned that 3rd grader should include ...
- an introduction that grabs the reader's attention and introduces the topic
- information that is categorized by topic including subtopics
- facts, details, expert words, definitions, and explanations
- a labeled picture or diagram
- a glossary
In math we are beginning to develop an understanding of fractions. Today we focused on... what is a half? Here are things that the class shared...
Today we finished with the question... are halves always equal? I asked the class to go home and think about things that come in halves. Are they equal? If not, can you show an example.
- both sides are equal
- a whole thing can be split into halves
- a circle can be cut into two halves
- a part + a part = whole
- split numbers in half ie. 100 is 50 + 50 so half of 100 is 50
- half of 4 is 2
- half of 5 is 2 and a half
- someone revised their thinking that half of 5 is 2 and 3 to half of 5 is 2 and a half + 2 and a half
Today we finished with the question... are halves always equal? I asked the class to go home and think about things that come in halves. Are they equal? If not, can you show an example.
