Today our school had an informational program for our students. The program taught our third graders about blood donation, blood components and how blood is used as medicine. Bailey Lake is sponsoring a blood drive Wednesday, December 3. If you are interested in participating in the blood donation drive you can request an appointment time using the form your child is bringing home tonight. -or- go on-line and visit redcrossblood.org and enter the sponsor code: clarkstoncommunity.
Book Fair- The week of Monday, December 1- Friday, December 5.
Your child will be visiting the book fair twice. The first visit is to make a wish list, and the second visit is for shopping. Check out the wish list I've created for our classroom if you are interested in adding to our classroom library.
If you are unable to make it to the book fair, this year you can visit the on-line book fair at www.scholastic.com/fair. Book purchases are shipped free to Bailey Lake and will be delivered before the holiday break.
It's a great place to pick up some gifts. :)
Today in math we had fun with a game called "Twenty-five" involving quick adding and subtracting. Goal is to reach the exact number of 25. Using a deck of cards with cards A-9. There were four players in each group. Students started off with a pile of cards in the center. First player turned over a card. The next player can add or subtract the card number from the original amount. This continues until the exact number of 25 is reached.
- This used great mental manipulating of numbers.
- Paying attention as other teammates call out the sum or difference.
- Here is an example of a student breaking apart a number to add. Started with 18 + 7. This is what the student said, I can add 18+2=20, then add the rest and that is 20+5=25.
- A tool that some students found helpful was the 200 chart. One student used the strategy of counting ten more because ten is an easier number to count by. Started with 19+9 more. This is what the student did. I know that 19+10 equals 29 then I can go back 1 and that equals 28.
