Today our class had music with Mrs. Thompson. The class played Halloween songs on the xylophone. After music the class went to art with Mrs. Banach. Using paper that looked like it had a texture made from dandelion fuzz, wood, leaves and water. Students drew a head on the paper.
FYI: Head lice was reported to our school today. Please help prevent the spread of head lice by checking your child's head and contact the school immediately if there are signs of head lice.

Today in science the major concepts are listed below.
What is light? A=a form of energy that you can see How does light energy travel? A=in waves, straight lines, in all directions, and through empty space What are some light sources? A=light bulbs, sun, fireflies, fire How are we able to see objects? A=light hits an object, it bounces off that object and to your eyes A quiz will be given on Tuesday over the abeove conepts. Today was our first delayed start morning. This is such a valuable time for the staff. This morning we worked on our 2014 School Improvement Plan. There are four main goal areas: Literacy, Math, Cultures of Thinking and Whole Child. I am part of a team that is working on strategies, activities and opportunities to support continue growth in our BLE Cultures of Thinking. We want all learners to engage in learning environments that promote active learning centered on their interests and strengths, with intellectual curiosity, critical thinking and collaboration. Today is going to be a poster day. Here are a few posters to share what we've been learning.
Tomorrow is a Delayed Start. School begins at 9:25.
Remember to study your spelling words for Friday's Test. want, people, who, they, said, until, very, were, where, asked This week is BLE spirit week.
Monday-hat day Tuesday-twin day Wednesday-pink out Thursday-sports day Friday-blue and gold day Tonight your child will be bringing home a game to play at your leisure. It is called Shake, Rattle and Roll. It is a great game to help our third graders learn how to round either to the nearest ten or hundred. The recording sheet/directions are yours to keep at home.
Yesterday the class brought home book orders. The order deadline is next Monday, No spelling words this week. This week is a vocabulary development week. The vocab words are all action verbs relating to fast and slow movements. We are engaging in word activities for the following words: run, jog, strut, dawdle, sprint and hustle. ![]() What do you know about a bar of soap? The class responded... It gets slimy and slippery when wet. The soap foams. It's fun to play with a bar of soap in the tub and squeeze the bar letting it fly out of your hands. Soap smells good. We use soap to wash our bodies. Today in science we began with a fun experiment and used the scientific process to help us think like scientists. We started by making observations and sharing what we already know about a bar of ivory soap. Students shared that water makes a bar of soap foamy, slippery and eventually disappear. Next we posed a question. What will happen to the bar of soap when heat from a microwave is applied? We made a hypothesis. To summarize our class thought the bar of soap would melt, explode, turn to liquid like butter does or slowly disintegrate. The next step was to conduct the experiment: 1. microwave 2. bar of ivory soap 3. parchment or wax paper or a microwavable bowl (Put the bar of soap on the parchment paper in the microwave. Cook 1-2 minutes. Careful may be hot when taking it out of the microwave.) After conducting the experiment we then need to draw conclusions about our hypothesis and what we learned. Surprise! The results were very unexpected. The results were incredible. The class enjoyed feeling the bar of soap after it came out of the microwave. Different responses were that the soap looked like a marshmallow, it feels like tissue paper, it crushed into a powder that looks like powdered sugar... I caution that the powder may cause sneezing or a little coughing. The ivory is very fragrant. Your child is bringing home a little bit of our experiment to try to push their thinking. Some plan to try more experiments like adding water to the sample that they are bringing home -or- adding water and putting it in the freezer -or- redoing the experiment at home. Yes. We did microwave Ivory brand soap. We have a room full of scientists! So curious and excited. The final step of the scientific process is to report the results. I'm sure your child will be excited to report the results to you.
