In math we continued to review addition of 2 and 3 digit numbers. Again, we showed addition with Base Ten pieces, Base Ten shorthand, traditional algorithm, number lines and more. It is amazing to see the class decompose numbers such as the number 546 + 341 + n.
1. 500+40+6 and 300+40+1
2. Add the 500+300=800
3. Add 40+40 =80
4. Add 6+1= 7
5. Now add the 800+80+7=887 (the answer)
Our read-aloud book is The Miraculous Journey of Edward Tulane by Kate DiCamillo. As we are reading we are paying close attention to the development of the character of Edward Tulane, a China rabbit. Edward has many thoughts and feelings that are unknown to the adults in his world. One of his emotions is not liking the parents because they view him as an object or thing. The little girl, Abilene, and her grandmother, Pellagrina, view Edward very differently. As we are reading the book together, I am modeling stopping and jotting on sticky notes important details about the characters and important events.
In writing we were working on identifying "vivid verbs" or specific verbs from our mentor text called Fireflies by Julie Brinkloe. We identified strong verbs such as flickering, glowing, dashed, and many more. Thoughts our students shared are that vivid verbs...
~grab the readers attention
~add details to a story
~"spice" up a story
~make a story more exciting
We learned that we want to choose our words wisely. Vivid verbs can add to a readers mental movie so that he/she can feel a part of a moment that the writer has written. Vivid verbs help bring our stories to life.
Cursive Handwriting: we have learned the letters a, c, d, and g. So exciting!
Our class field trip is quickly approaching. Our trip is very early compared to years past. This trip is a preview of Michigan Government and Michigan History. The class has been learning an overview of both government and history to help create more prior knowledge. Please share your knowledge of both Michigan's Government and History to help make this experience a memorable one.
