Today we read the book called "I Like Myself" by Karen Beaumont. We talked about how author's write books with a big idea or message for the reader. This is called the "Author's Message". The class shared their thoughts on what they thought was the "Author's Message" of our story. This is something that we can now think about as we read stories. |
In writing we reviewed the big ideas that we have learned to help us write creative and interesting personal narrative stories. Here is what we have learned...
- Lead: the beginning our our stories need to help a reader know who the characters are and what the setting is in our small moment story.
- We write about one moment that we can remember with great detail.
- We write second by second stories.
- We choose descriptive details that help the reader make a picture or movie in his/her mind.
- We choose specific verbs to action to our stories.
- We add transition words to add excitement and help create a story sequence.
- We tell the internal story by adding thoughts, feelings, and responses to what is happening.
- Conclusion: we end our stories with a final thought, feeling or realization. We can use phrases like I will always remember...

We have been practicing our new spelling words in class. A large focus has been on handwriting: correct print letter formation and size. We are using grid paper to help us with he size of the letters. Help your child transition to writing on lined paper. Often times students write a word like this "Pretty" and the "P" is capitalized. The "P" should be like this "pretty".
